UniSQ student turns data into impact through industry partnership
Jamil Istiaq has always been driven by the desire to transform complex data into actionable insights.
With support from the University of Southern Queensland’s (UniSQ) National Priorities and Industry Linkage Fund (NPILF) team, the Master of Data Science student had the opportunity to do just that.
Accepted into a work experience program with the Toowoomba-based organisation STATIM, Jamil was able to kickstart his career in data science.
STATIM, which focuses on improving the liveability of regional and rural Australia through sustainable healthcare solutions, guided Jamil as he collaborated with industry professionals to address healthcare data challenges.
We caught up with him to ask him about his experience.
Jamil, you’ve since completed your Master of Data Science. What are you hoping to do with your career?
As a passionate data enthusiast, I aspire to build a career in the field of data science. Throughout my studies, I have gained expertise in advanced tools such as Python, Power BI, and Tableau. I am currently exploring opportunities across Australia to apply my knowledge to real-world data challenges and create a meaningful impact in communities.
Why is it important that you gain industry experience?
Industry experience is crucial for students across all disciplines. While theoretical knowledge provides a solid foundation, real-world applications often involve complex, unstructured data that require adaptive problem-solving skills. Collaborating with industry partners allows students to apply their academic learning in dynamic, real-world settings. Such experiences not only validate our preparedness for the workforce but also enhance our professional skill set beyond what traditional coursework offers.
What was your experience with STATIM and how did you get involved in the program?
As part of my master’s curriculum, I enrolled in a course called Applied Analytics, which was designed in collaboration with both industry and academia to tackle real-world challenges in the healthcare sector. My experience with the STATIM program was truly transformative. Having the opportunity to collaborate with the company directors, William and Jaden, was invaluable, as they were always willing to address our queries with patience and insightful guidance. Their expertise provided us with a deeper understanding of industry expectations and real-life data challenges.
What did you learn and how did it add to your university experience?
From a learning perspective, this collaboration significantly enriched my knowledge. It instilled confidence in my abilities and reinforced my belief that I can excel within my field and even explore interdisciplinary applications of my skills. The industry experience offered through STATIM allowed me to understand firsthand what employers seek and how I can meet their demands effectively.
What is your advice to students thinking about getting involved in a program like this?
I strongly encourage students to participate in industry programs. These initiatives bridge the gap between academic learning and professional practice, offering invaluable exposure to real-world challenges. Engaging with industry experts helps shape one’s knowledge, highlights key areas of focus, and ultimately enhances career readiness.
