Presenters: Prof Jessica Gildersleeve and Dr India Bryce
As Gina Wisker notes, arts and humanities ‘research needs to ask questions of its subject matter like any other research area; just like the scientist, the artist cannot afford to be merely descriptive or narrative in his or her research recording mode’ (203). In this seminar, we will introduce the qualitative method of thematic analysis: an inductive process of synthesis using narratives to locate, interpret and define the collective commonalities and differences explicit in the data (Crowe, Inder & Porter, 2015; Liamputtong, 2012). Specifically, we explain a blended approach of Braun and Clarke’s (2019) six steps, as well as Meier’s (2000) hierarchical approach. We explain how this allows us to explore patterns and codes, then engage in a refining process. This seminar is suitable for anyone engaged in qualitative research, or curious to learn more!
