When

The research on the educational opportunities for women in the nineteenth century in Britain and Australia has been incredibly subject specific and very nation-specific. This has led to a number of overarching areas such as race, gender and class that has been not been researched in detail. This research examines the higher education, trade education and secondary education options available to women, focusing on gender, race and class. This will include:

  • Exploring the education opportunities available to women using a transnational focus across Britain and Australia, detailing the similarities and differences between the metropole and the colonies.
  • Investigating the history of feminism through an educational lens and contribute to historiographical debates in regard to women and education.
  • Discussing the impact this education had on nineteenth-century social movements and highlighting what some of the early recipients of this education have gone on to accomplish.
