SAGE Athena Swan Scholarship: UniSQ Women in STEMM Research

Women have historically been, and continue to be, significantly under-represented in STEMM fields, which may reflect past disadvantage. The University recognises the important role that equal opportunity measures contemplated by anti-discrimination law can make in opening up opportunities for women, including in STEMM fields. 

Accordingly, these scholarships are open only to applicants who are women from the research fields listed below:

  • Astrophysics 
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Mathematics
  • Information Technology
 
  • Stipend of AUD $33,000 per annum.
  • Standard period of tenure of a scholarship is three years. Periods of study already undertaken towards the degree will be deducted from the period of tenure.
 

To be eligible applicants must:   

  • identify as a woman and be studying in one of the above listed fields;
  • have applied for entry to, or are currently enrolled in, the PhD program at UniSQ;
  • meet the PhD entry requirements;
  • be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, or New Zealand citizen;
  • not be receiving equivalent support providing a benefit greater than 75% of the student’s stipend rate; and
  • commence or continue the program in 2023.
 

Applicants will be assessed according to the Higher Degree by Research Student Scholarship Procedure against the following criteria:

  • record of the applicant relative to opportunity, including academic performance, qualifications, grade point average, honours classification, and awards;
  • evidence of research capability, including previous research experience, research publications, and quality of research project proposal;
  • alignment with the University’s research priorities, potential to join a high-performing research team, and relevance to the Australian research context;
  • record of the supervisory team, including previous successful supervision and expertise relevant to the project as evidenced by research publications.
