Career coaches and career counsellors both aim to assist individuals with their career paths, but they do so in different ways. Career coaches are typically focused on helping clients achieve specific career goals and improve their professional lives. They work on developing skills, enhancing job performance, and navigating career transitions, often using motivational techniques and strategic planning.
Career counsellors, however, have a broader scope that includes helping individuals understand their skills, interests, and values to make informed career and educational decisions. They use a variety of assessments and counselling techniques to guide clients in exploring their career options and overcoming challenges. Career counsellors often have a background in psychology or counselling, enabling them to address a wider range of issues that influence career choices.
The time it takes to become a career counsellor can vary depending on factors such as your educational background, training requirements, and employment opportunities.
At UniSQ, you have several educational pathways available to become a career counsellor, including a Graduate Certificate of Education, Graduate Diploma of Education and a Master of Education. Typically, a postgraduate certificate or diploma will take 0.5 - 1 year to complete and a masters, 1.5 years.
It's also possible to study part-time, which extends the period needed to complete your courses, allowing for greater flexibility with your schedule and other commitments.
