Katie Rae's journey is a shining example of dedication and passion for healthcare. Born and raised on a cattle property in Roma, Katie's personal experiences with the healthcare system inspired her to pursue a career in health.

Katie's first step into the healthcare field was completing a Bachelor of Nursing from UniSQ. During her nursing degree, she completed several clinical placements in various healthcare settings, including the Toowoomba Base Hospital, Roma Hospital, and Salem Aged Care. One of her most memorable experiences was participating in the GROW Rural program, which allowed her to practice in rural and remote Queensland communities.

After graduating in 2018, Katie worked as a registered nurse in a respiratory and infectious diseases unit. However, she felt there was more to learn and experience and she returned to UniSQ to pursue a Bachelor of Paramedicine. Katie found the decision to return to UniSQ an easy one, as she felt well-supported during her nursing degree and appreciated the practical experiences that prepared her for the workforce.

“When I started studying paramedicine, I was thrilled to find we could book practice spaces and use the equipment we use throughout classes and on the road to practice.

“My lecturers know my name, and they could tailor classes to suit the group's needs as classes were small, which I found beneficial.”

Katie's passion for paramedicine was further fueled by her mother's diagnosis with multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer. This personal challenge motivated her to seek a career where she could provide high-acuity care outside of a hospital setting.

Katie's journey is a testament to her passion and commitment to making a positive impact in her community. With dedication and the right support, it's possible to achieve your dreams and make a real difference.
