If you're eagerly awaiting your acceptance into the world of higher education, we've got your back. Understanding university offers can be a bit like trying to solve a puzzle, especially when navigating the different ways to apply and where the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) fits into the scheme of things. But don't worry; we're here to break it all down for you.

What is QTAC?

QTAC stands for the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre, and it plays a crucial role in helping you secure your spot at universities in Queensland, including the us, UniSQ. Think of QTAC as the middleman between you and the university of your dreams. Whether you're a recent high school graduate or a mature-age student, QTAC is the bridge to your academic journey.

QTAC vs direct and what is the difference?

QTAC receives and processes university applications for the majority of undergraduate degrees offered by universities in Queensland. There are a few exceptions to the rule but generally if you want to apply for a UniSQ degree you submit an application via QTAC if you:

  • have never studied with UniSQ before, or
  • are a Year 12 student, or
  • want to transfer to UniSQ from another university.

A direct application is when you apply for a degree directly to your chosen education provider. You can apply directly to UniSQ if you:

  • are a current or previous UniSQ student returning to study with complete or incomplete qualifications (excluding Head Start students), or
  • have recently graduated from TAFE.

It can feel a bit overwhelming so the best place to start is to check the ‘how to apply’ information of your chosen UniSQ degree. Here you will find out how to apply – either via QTAC or direct, the relevant QTAC codes (if applicable) and when you need to have your application submitted by (also known as the ‘closing dates’).
If you need more information or want to discuss your options, our friendly team of degree experts are ready to take your call, email or live-chat with you

QTAC offer rounds

Alright, now we’ve established if you need to apply via QTAC, let's dive into a bit more detail about what to expect when QTAC makes contact – also known as ‘QTAC offer rounds’. These are the main events in the world of university admissions. They're the moments when you find out if you've  been accepted into your desired degree.

Offer rounds are released by QTAC in multiple phases, including the first offer round. This round is for students wanting to start study in Semester 1. This first round offer comes out mid-late December, followed by a second offer round in January. There are also smaller offer rounds throughout the year, but let's focus on the first round uni offers. This is where the early birds get their worm – or in this case, their acceptance letter. If you want to start university as soon as possible, aim for this round. Keep an eye on those calendars and the QTAC course offer dates and vacancy webpage.

How to accept your university offer

Once you receive that exciting email from QTAC, your next step is to accept your QTAC offer. It's a piece of cake, really. You can accept your university offer through the QTAC website or by following the instructions provided in your offer email or SMS.

If you don’t receive an offer for your chosen degree, that’s ok! If your ATAR didn’t meet the cut-off to get you into your desired program, you can change your preference. This allows you to choose another course that will get you into UniSQ, and then upgrade to your preferred course later on.

UniSQ can help you get into your desired degree regardless of your ATAR - even if you didn't study for ATAR. Our free Pathway Programs can help you get into your chosen degree. Pathways can be as short as one semester and can guarantee you entry into most UniSQ degrees. You'll learn how to succeed at university and gain the confidence to follow your dream career.

How long do I have to accept a university offer?

Great question! You have a limited window of opportunity to accept your university offer. It's typically around one to two weeks from the time you receive the offer, but your offer email will include the date you need to respond by. So, as soon as you see that acceptance letter in your inbox, don't delay – jump on it and hit that ‘accept’ button!

What’s next after accepting my offer to study at UniSQ?

Once you’ve accepted your offer, via QTAC or UniSQ, we will email you with information on how to get set up at UniSQ and to enrol you in your courses (subjects) for your degree. To help you enrol as a new student at UniSQ we’ve created a step-by-step guide to so you can enrol in your courses and look at any other administration required for your degree.

After you’ve enrolled, you can now start exploring more about life at UniSQ. Meet your future teaching staff, explore our clubs and societies, learn about the support and study services available and meet fellow students by attending orientation

QTAC ranking

Now, you might be wondering how universities decide who gets in and who doesn't. It's not just about luck; it's about your QTAC ranking. This ranking is also known as your selection rank. The selection rank is calculated based on a combination of your ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) and any additional adjustments that apply to you.  The selection rank profile gives you a more detailed overview on how the QTAC ranking works.

How long does ATAR last?

Your ATAR score does not expire once you leave school. If you decide to take a gap year or attend university in the future, you can still use your ATAR for admission to a university.
