Counselling and Wellbeing

Counselling is usually short-term and focused on the issues impacting your study and wellbeing. You can access UniSQ counselling services, online, face to face and over the phone. You may be referred to appropriate practitioners off-campus if long-term counselling or specialist services are required.
You may want to use our counselling service and other, useful self-help resources to enhance your wellbeing, and to: 

If you are unwell and your health is affecting your studies contact your GP to obtain a medical certificate which you will need in order to apply for assignment extensions, deferring exams and/or registering for UniSQ disability support.

Online counselling

You can decide whether you would like to talk with a Student Counsellor online, face to face or telephone, whatever suits your preference.  The free and confidential session lasts up to 50 minutes. You can also choose Email Counselling as another way of talking to a Student Counsellor.

How to access online counselling

Please contact us to request an online counselling appointment or book directly by clicking on the link below ‘Book now’ (except for Email Counselling). Please read the following information carefully so you understand the different modes of online counselling and how to access each type.

Video Counselling is an in person face-to-face session however conducted through a cloud based service called Zoom, using the HD video function only. If you would prefer you can arrange with the Student Counsellor to hold a session via Zoom, using the audio function only. To access Video Counselling call or email the Wellbeing Team using the contact details below or book online by clicking on the ‘Book now’ icon below.

 

After-hours support 

If you require support outside of normal business hours, please contact the below services. 

  • Lifeline (13 11 14) is a free and confidential service staffed by trained telephone counsellors. 
  • 1300 MH CALL 24/7 (1 300 642 255) is a confidential mental health telephone triage service that provides the first point of contact to public mental health services to Queenslanders. For services located inter-state, contact the Health Direct listing below.
  • Health Direct for health advice (1800 022 222)   
  • 13 YARN Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander crisis support service (13 92 76)

Feeling good and thriving emotionally and academically is very important to your health and wellbeing. For information to raise awareness of mental health issues and strategies to help, access the wellness self-help resources online at Wellbeing Tools for you

A variety of support is offered through our Student Support website

THIS WAY UP provides a free online student wellbeing course for learning practical strategies for coping with study stress and looking after yourself while at uni. 

Mood Gym is a free, self-help resource to manage the symptoms of depression and anxiety.
