Exam preparation

The best way to do well on an exam is to consider the entire length of your course as a pre-exam preparation period. As courses can last a few months, you may find it difficult to make the connection between your daily homework and your exam.

To get high marks, start by recognizing that all academic work done through the semester, summer, or school year is exam studying.

Strategies

To make sure you’re ready for your exam, use the following strategies:

  1. manage your time effectively and develop a study plan
  2. keep up with reading throughout the semester
  3. develop effective note-taking techniques
  4. attend classes regularly
  5. actively participate in group discussions and/or study groups
  6. create mind maps using sites like Canva, Cmap and Bubble.us help you summarise vital information from lectures and textbooks
  7. create a 24-hour learning environment by putting up review charts and points where you can see them daily
  8. apply memory techniques
  9. use multiple intelligences - this concept explains the number of different ways in which a human can have intelligence and how this self-knowledge can help us live, work, and study more efficiently.

Exam checklist

Preparation and planning are the keys to exam success. Check that you know:

  • the timing of your exam as stated in your Formal Exam Schedule
  • the items you will require to complete your exams and the materials you are authorised to access during your exam
  • the length and format of the exam
  • how to divide your time between questions
  • the identification you require for admission into the exam.
