From the University of Southern Queensland to Mahidol University.

For University of Southern Queensland student Dushan Ivanovic, the world truly is his oyster.

From Toowoomba to Thailand, his dream of studying abroad is set to become a reality after receiving a New Colombo Plan Mobility Grant.

Dushan will complete his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Business majoring in International Relations and Marketing at Mahidol University.

Eager to embrace new cultures and experiences, he is looking forward to travelling outside his comfort zone. We recently chatted with Dushan to hear about his study journey and upcoming adventure.

What inspired you to study a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Business?

I decided to study this degree due to my passion for both Marketing and International Relations. I studied Business back in high school as part of a Head Start course and I realised how important advertising is for any organisation, especially if it is promoted towards the right audience. I also became more interested in politics and the ways in which Australia showcases its diplomacy throughout the region. Selecting a dual degree in these fields provides me with the best of both worlds and improves my likelihood of finding employment opportunities on a global scale.

How did you feel when you received a New Colombo Plan Mobility Grant?

It was one of the best moments of my life. I've always wanted to try new experiences during university and receiving this scholarship made me feel on top of the world. The opportunity to finish my degree in Thailand and learn more about the nation's traditions and values during this journey is truly a blessing.

Have you always been interested in studying abroad?

I wish I applied for a study abroad opportunity during my earlier years at UniSQ. Despite always having an interest in travelling the world and broadening my horizons, I didn’t participate in opportunities as much as I would’ve liked. I was still getting used to the university environment and I was hesitant to get out of my comfort zone.

What are you most looking forward to on your trip?

I'm looking forward to gaining a new perspective on life and the ways in which people from Thailand preserve their culture, values and beliefs. I'm also excited to develop new friendships along the way and I plan on maintaining these connections when I come back to Australia. Eating Thai food and learning the local language are at the top of my list as well!

What are your future career aspirations?

In terms of my future career, I always tell myself to aim high but to also find an environment I am comfortable with. I’d like to work in commerce after I finish my degree, primarily as my skills are more aligned with digital marketing as well as forms of project management and administration.
