First Nations
As part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring First Nations input and engagement, Hub Director Prof John McVeigh, alongside Hub First Nations Knowledge Broker, Dr Raelene Ward, and Director of UniSQ's Centre for Heritage and Culture, Prof Celmara Pocock, embarked on a meaningful journey across south western Queensland and northern New South Wales earlier this year.
Their mission? To connect with First Nations Elders and deeply understand their perspectives on Country. The conversations were rich and varied, covering crucial topics such as:
- The impact of water infrastructure
- Pressures from land use
- Uncertainties surrounding regulatory impacts
- The importance of local voices
- Drought as part of the climate cycle
- How drought affects the entire community
- Changes in the landscape
- The loss of cultural practices
- Declining populations
"One of the essential insights we've gained from our discussions is the importance of fostering a nurturing relationship with First Nations people. This approach significantly enhances our understanding and awareness of cultural matters", said Dr Raelene Ward, First Nations Knowledge Broker of the SQNNSW Innovation Hub.
