The idea of not being defined to one career or industry appealed to graduate Despena Dickerson. She chose to study a double degree in Arts and Business (majoring in Public Relations and Marketing) in order to combine her two areas of interest. University had always been a lifelong goal for Despena, but she felt her heart torn. Both a talented singer and basketballer, she is keeping her options open when choosing a career path after study.
‘A degree in PR can open up a lot doors to different careers. I’m really passionate about sports and entertainment. If I’m not able to become successful as a singer or basketball player I will be able to work in the field which is equally as fulfilling.’
Despena fully embraced university life, jumping at the opportunity to play Basketball at the University Games, and building lasting friendships and networks in her classes. She found learning from industry professionals and gaining an insight into what it’s like working in the industry a major benefit.
‘I was able to develop a relationship with my lecturers who genuinely wanted to help me succeed. I never felt scared to ask for help when I needed it.’
