Jacob

Being taken 'to places never thought possible'
UniSQ Film Student

From a 13-year-old boy who loved making films, to an international Cinematographer and a Film Advisor - Jacob couldn’t resist following his childhood dreams into a creative industry career. Choosing a UniSQ Bachelor of Creative Arts as his starting platform, Jacob knew he’d chosen a university that aligned with his goals and could set him up with lifelong connections.

Ticking all the right boxes, Jacob says he found UniSQ to be very inviting. He loved the professional working environments and said the campuses were "absolutely amazing and in convenient locations!"

“The facilities and studios were exactly what you would see in a professional working environment. Combined with the constant hands-on learning, I knew that this was an environment I wanted to be surrounded by.”

Fast forward to graduating in 2020 and Jacob has since travelled to over 40 countries around the world doing what he loves, meeting incredible people along the way. Jacob currently works as a Cinematographer and a Film Advisor for international production houses and has been involved in projects across Foxtel, Amazon Prime, and Discovery Plus among others.

He is living proof that having a career in the creative arts industry isn’t just a fairy-tale dream but can be a reality. Jacob says his studies have led him on paths he never expected, defying the myth that only a few people ‘make it’ in the industry.

“The reality is this is a career line that has multiple pathways in industries that are constantly looking for new faces.”

With world-class facilities and a strong focus on hands-on learning, Jacob felt UniSQ offered him an engaging and inspiring course which replicated that of the real-world practice, all of which helped motivate him to reach the professional level he dreamed of as a child.

“I absolutely loved how practical the learning was. We were constantly working with different groups on different projects, both in campus studios or outside on a film or TV shoot. I can honestly say that no day felt the same.”

Jacob works alongside some of his fellow Creative Arts graduates and looks back at his years studying with fond memories. He is grateful for the support provided by UniSQ’s dynamic lecturers who helped make him feel "part of one big creative family".

Jacob encourages anyone with a passion for the industry to seize opportunities that come your way
