Overview

  • Throughout study at UniSQ, you will tailor your skills to meet the diverse and evolving requirements of the independent, contemporary musician.
  • The Music Practice major will see you explore individual and collaborative music making, live and digital performance, as well as songwriting, composition and musical arrangement.
  • By focussing on readily available technologies, we enable graduates to develop a sustainable DIY practice to navigate the increasing pace of change and disruption in creative industries, and to produce innovative music practices.

Career outcomes

  • UniSQ’s Bachelor of Music can prepare you for careers as a performer, singer-songwriter, studio or classroom music teacher, music studio owner/operator, commercial songwriter, or music journalist.

Entry requirements

To study this degree we assume you have sound knowledge in:

  • English (Units 3 and 4, C)

We assume that your knowledge is equivalent to a grade C or higher in Units 3 and 4 at Australian Year 12 high school level. Find out more about assumed knowledge.

Note: It is a requirement that Queensland-based students hold a current positive notice indicating that they are deemed suitable for working with children and young people whilst studying the Bachelor of Music. English language requirements

You are required to meet the applicable English language requirements and this degree requires a minimum of IELTS 6.0 with a minimum 5.5 in each subscore. UniSQ also accepts other English language proficiency tests.

If you don't meet the English language requirements, you can apply to study UniSQ's UniReady courses TPP0122 and TPP0123, or the English for Academic Purposes EAP2 pathway program through the Union Institute of Language (UIL).

Audition and interview information

On-campus applicants must attend an audition and interview and perform two contrasting pieces. Applicants for online study will submit a video recording of their performances and attend a phone / Skype interview.

Applicants will also need to provide:

  • A school exit statement, or evidence of previous education standard achieved.
  • Their own accompanying tracks on MP3 or an iPod if required.
  • A written statement (500 words) addressing a musical experience which has inspired, motivated or moved you. It might be a performance or concert you attended or participated in, or music of a particular artist or work. The submission should be typed and signed by you, with a statement which certifies that the work is your own. Please present your submission at interview.
  • Applicants are not required to have undertaken high school music, or Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) practical/theory, or musicianship exams.

Recognition of prior learning or work experience

If you have previously studied in your home country, you may be eligible for recognition of prior learning to reduce the number of courses that you need to study to finish your program.

*The second 8-unit major can be chosen from any approved 8-unit major in another discipline in the School of Creative Arts (e.g. Visual Art, TV/Radio, Film Production, Theatre, Digital Media etc. providing all entry requirements are met) or from an another major outside of the creative arts in consultation and with approval from the degree director.
