Overview

  • If you are an innovative, empathetic, and collaborative theatre practitioner, the Bachelor of Theatre (Theatre Making) will increase your competitive edge by teaching you how to make new dramatic works for entertainment, community-arts, education, health and the environmental agencies.
  • The Theatre Making major introduces you to the rigorous theory and practice in generating original work. Here, you will adapt theatre skills and processes for communities and educators, in order to deliver sustainable community-participatory creative arts projects.
  • In the final year of study, you will develop projects which provide authentic skills for a broad range of career pathways.

Entry requirements

To study this degree we assume you have sound knowledge in:

  • English (Units 3 and 4, C)

We assume that your knowledge is equivalent to a grade C or higher in Units 3 and 4 at Australian Year 12 high school level. Find out more about assumed knowledge.

  • Attend an audition and/or interview (see below for details).

Note: It is a requirement that Queensland-based students hold a current positive notice indicating that they are deemed suitable for working with children and young people whilst studying the Bachelor of Theatre. Further information about the Blue Card or Exemption Card suitability process is available from the Blue Card Services.

English language requirements

You are required to meet the applicable English language requirements and this degree requires a minimum of IELTS 6.5 with a minimum 6.0 in each subscore. UniSQ also accepts other English language proficiency tests.

If you don't meet the English language requirements, you can apply to study the English for Academic Purposes EAP3 pathway program through the Union Institute of Language (UIL).

Audition and interview information

  • You are required to present an audition as well as participate in a group workshop and interview process, and present a portfolio of previous achievements.
  • Applicants to Theatre Making major may opt to forgo presentation of an audition performance but must participate in a group workshop and interview process and present a portfolio of previous achievements. You should be prepared to discuss those achievements and experiences with the interview panel.

Please also bring the following:

  • a passport-sized photo of yourself
  • a school exit statement or evidence of previous education standard achieved
  • a written statement (500 words) describing the most influential theatre or community arts related performance or event you have witnessed or participated in. Why was this event so important to you? How has it shaped your view and understanding of arts practice. What things did you learn from the experience? How does this event connect to your personal values and beliefs.

Information on audition pieces will available closer to the annual audition rounds. Interviews and auditions will be held at UniSQ Springfield, UniSQ Ipswich and UniSQ Toowoomba in the last months of each year. If you're not able to audition/interview in person, you can arrange to present a video-based audition and/or a telephone interview.

Recognition of prior learning or work experience

If you have previously studied in your home country, you may be eligible for recognition of prior learning to reduce the number of courses that you need to study to finish your program.

*The second 8-unit major can be chosen from any approved 8-unit major in another discipline in the School of Creative Arts (e.g. Visual Art, Music, TV/Radio, Film Production etc. providing all entry requirements are met) or from a recommended major outside of the creative arts, such as Psychology, Creative and Critical Writing, Advertising, or English Literature; or another major in consultation and with approval from the degree director.
