Overview

  • UniSQ's Master of Education (Guidance, Counselling and Careers) is ideal for educators, counsellors, trainers and other interested professionals, wishing to extend their career as a guidance officer, guidance counsellor, school counsellor or careers advisor.  
  • You will have the opportunity to study in the areas of educational counselling; child abuse and neglect; wellbeing promotion; dysregulation in social and emotional learning and wellbeing of children and young people; counselling practicum; and individual assessment. 
  • Develop your expertise in career development and career self-management, learning more about the relevance of career development in education and the contemporary world of work. 
  • Expand your understanding of the transformative role of education in society, and develop the skills to work through the contemporary challenges faced by educators in rapidly changing, diverse communities. 
  • Develop the skills to solve current issues in the education environment by using your own experiences as a backdrop to your studies. 
  • This specialisation does not qualify you for teacher registration in Queensland. You can qualify for teacher registration in Queensland with the Master of Learning and Teaching (Early Years), Master of Learning and Teaching (Primary) or Master of Learning and Teaching (Secondary).

Career outcomes

  • Career opportunities exist in an array of work environments from schools, TAFEs and universities to government agencies and industry. Roles can include guidance officer, guidance counsellor, school counsellor or career advisor. 
  • Students planning to work as a Guidance Officer in Education Queensland's state schools require registration as a teacher in addition to the Master of Education (Guidance, Counselling and Careers). Counselling roles in schools in the Independent or Catholic sectors in Queensland may have different requirements. You should check the requirements with your prospective employer. 
  • Students planning to work outside Queensland and who are intending to use the Master of Education (Guidance, Counselling and Careers) for employment in schools in a guidance and counselling role should consult relevant State and Territory registration bodies. 
 

Entry requirements

  • Approved bachelor degree, or equivalent, in Education.
  • Candidates with a bachelor degree, or equivalent, in a non-related discipline may be eligible for entry into UniSQ's Graduate Certificate of Education. Upon completion and achievement of a minimum GPA of 4.0, they may apply for entry into the Master of Education.

English language requirements

You are required to meet the applicable English language requirements and this degree requires a minimum of IELTS 6.5 with a minimum 6.0 in each subscore. UniSQ also accepts other English language proficiency tests.

If you don't meet the English language requirements, you can apply to study the English for Academic Purposes EAP3 pathway program through the Union Institute of Language (UIL).

Recognition of prior learning or work experience

If you have previously studied in your home country, you may be eligible for recognition of prior learning to reduce the number of courses that you need to study to finish your program.
