Overview

  • Elevate your mechatronics engineering expertise with a focus on control system design, machine vision, and data processing.
  • Develop practical skills in motors, gearing, and simulation, alongside in-depth study of state space design, filtering techniques, and digital control principles.
  • Explore the realm of robotic engineering, understanding how to integrate components for creating seamless mechatronic systems, from AI robotic platforms to robotic additive manufacturing.
  • Uncover the nuances of computer vision and image processing in this engineering master's program, delving into advanced applications like facial recognition, OpenCV, AR and VR technology, chemical sensors, and penetrative radars.
  • Master various aspects, from modeling and controlling drones to navigating underwater robots, and even programming the Boston Robotics dog, covering obstacle avoidance, path planning, and robot communication.
  • Delve into artificial intelligence engineering and machine learning as integral components of this degree.
  • If seeking an online engineering degree, this program offers flexibility; while some elements require in-person completion (refer to residential schools details below), the majority can be achieved online.

Further study

Graduates from the Master of Professional Engineering are eligible to be considered for higher research degrees such as the Master of Research or PhD studies.

Professional accreditation

The program is accredited by Engineers Australia and graduates are eligible for Graduate membership at the Professional Engineer level.

Career outcomes

Upon completion of the Master of Professional Engineering (Mechatronics and Robotic Engineering), you will emerge equipped to contribute significantly to various sectors, such as medical technology, transportation systems, mining resource extraction, power generation, distribution, renewable energy systems, electric vehicles, and even spacecraft and satellites. The skill set acquired through this program positions you for specific roles outlined by the Engineers Australia Mechatronics Field of Practice, encompassing positions like robotics engineers, robotics design engineer, research mechatronic engineer, or automation engineer.

Entry requirements

  • Australian university three or four-year Bachelor degree in engineering in the relevant specialisation, or equivalent.
    Or
  • Australian university four-year Bachelor degree in engineering in a non-related specialisation, or equivalent.

To be eligible for advanced standing entry:

  • Completion of an Australian university four-year embedded honours degree in engineering in the same or closely related cognate specialisation (major).

English language requirements

You are required to meet the applicable English language requirements and this degree requires a minimum of IELTS 6.5 with a minimum 6.0 in each subscore. UniSQ also accepts other English language proficiency tests.

If you don't meet the English language requirements, you can apply to study the English for Academic Purposes EAP3 pathway program through the Union Institute of Language (UIL).

Recognition of prior learning or work experience

If you have previously studied in your home country, you may be eligible for recognition of prior learning to reduce the number of courses that you need to study to finish your program.

Degree structure

To complete this degree students must complete 12 units. Most courses (similar to ‘subjects’) are valued at 1 unit.

Courses to be studied Units
Core courses 6
Specialisation courses 6
Electives 4
Total 16

Refer to the UniSQ Handbook for courses to be studied and recommended enrolment patterns.

Residential schools

This degree has a mandatory attendance requirement for some of the residential school courses. All students will have the opportunity to come on-campus for residential schools, where you will attend face-to-face lectures and tutorials to gain practical experience, use facilities and specialist equipment, and meet staff and other students.
